Why the ostrich? We're glad you asked!

In the early 1900’s, Dr. AJ Chandler brought Ostriches from the east; they were used for ranch work and their feathers to adorn ladies' hats for almost a century. 

Dr. AJ Chandler’s Ostrich farm was located on the current site of the San Marcos Hotel

In 1988 the Chandler’s retired to farm life and were the inspiration behind the newly formed Ostrich Festival, a celebration of food. Fun, community, and ostriches!
